Meet the two of us...

Shiloh and me (We know it should be Shiloh and I – give us a break already!) Shiloh and me write because we want and need to. Which of those is greater, we’re not sure. It is a real joy to put words to paper (or screen). But writing is also a great way to work through some issues. Teaching was fulfilling, joyful, exhilarating, exhausting, and so much more; and being twice rescued can hold a stress, anxiety, and anticipation – with real life and death consequences. So… Shiloh and me have some issues we are working through. Writing helps us on that pathway. Time outside, sitting on Shiloh’s rock, watching the waves, feeling the sun, with a bit of breeze blowing from the Northwest; it can lend a certain serenity to the day. And we might leave with a space for peace in our souls. If that is not a cure for life’s issues, it is at least a step closer. Neither of us minds that we have some issues. Perhaps you don’t mind that we have some issues. Perhaps you have some issues of your own? But really, don’t we all have some issues?

The Haiku we write cry out for a medium that matches the island’s beauty and serenity – and quirkiness! Etching the stories into rocks that we find (all from Lake Superior, most from Madeline), seems to fit the intent of these words that find us. Laser etching or physically hand-etching Haiku into island rock helps to anchor our art and poetry into the physicality of the island’s sand, waves, and seasons. These rocks and etchings are purposely unpolished, just like our Haiku and the island itself.

So…. Here we are, you and Shiloh and me. Because you have read some of these words, wherever you are now, you have a connection to us and to the island. Across the miles, we are remembering together. And wherever you are, we are so glad to share these island stories with you! We hope they remind you of this place that is so special to us. And in this moment of connectivity - to us all and to the island – joy and peace!
